About
Our Story
The Ship Inn at Cockwood is a 17th-century, mainly cob-built pub that has been an incredibly popular venue for locals, nearby communities and holidaymakers - many returning year after year.

In October 2023, following persistent bad weather and a storm, the gable end of the building collapsed. Fortunately, no one was injured. Since then, apart from protective scaffolding and covers, nothing has changed.

The Challenge
In June 2025, the community was informed that the current owners, Punch Taverns, were preparing to sell the property as it stood.

The Community Response
In July 2025, the local community quickly came together to explore the possibility of purchasing and rebuilding the pub. Over 90 residents attended a public meeting and voted overwhelmingly in favour of pursuing this option. In the same month, following an application from Dawlish Town Council, Teignmouth District Council granted an application for The Ship to be listed as an Asset of Community Value.

Our Aim
Our aim is simple: to achieve the restoration of The Ship Inn, and return it to the warm, inviting and inclusive environment it once was.

News update
Committee meeting 13th November
The meeting discussed various developments and plans:
Clarification of aims and objectives:
The committee has issued the following statement :
"We wish to make it clear that our full support will be given to a commercial solution to refloat The Ship pub. It is only in the event that a commercial resolution is not achieved that we, as a fall back position, would seek to further explore the community option."

Silent Auction, Dec 5th
A framed aerial photograph was auctioned online on the Cockwood Community Network Whatsapp group, and the winning bid was £25.
Congratulations to the winning bidder, who will now stash it away in their secret gallery for private viewing!
